The effects of our country’s economic climate affect everyone. Good, hard-working people who sometimes have trouble making ends meet, as well as their family, friends and employers, are finding themselves the targets of vicious and illegal collection tactics.

No one plans on getting into debt. It is a gradual process that leads to the inability to pay your monthly bills or meet necessary expenses. Credit cards, medical bills, mortgage payments – they all add up quickly. Sometimes it seems you’ll never find your way out, no matter how hard you try. YOU ARE NOT A DEADBEAT OR A THIEF. You cannot be jailed because you fell behind in your debt payments. Federal law prohibits a debt collector from scaring you into paying.

The Southeast Consumer Law was founded because of the abundant use of abusive, deceptive and unfair debt collection practices by many debt collectors. Abusive debt collection practices contribute to the number of personal bankruptcies, to marital instability, to the loss of jobs, to poor health and emotional well-being and to invasions of individual privacy.
