In India, lawyers ("advocates") are enrolled with a state-level Bar Council under the Advocates Act, 1961, with the Bar Council of India acting as the apex regulatory body nationally. Finding & Verifying an Advocate

  • Bar Council of India The statutory national body regulating the legal profession and legal education in India. Use its Advocate Search tool to verify an advocate's enrollment by name or enrollment number.
  • NALSA — State Legal Services Authorities directory Enrollment itself happens with your state's own Bar Council (e.g. Delhi, Maharashtra & Goa, Rajasthan), several of which run their own separate advocate-verification tools - NALSA's state authority network is a reliable starting point for finding your state's official legal bodies.

Legal Aid & Free Help

  • National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) Constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, NALSA provides free legal aid - representation, court fees, and document drafting - to eligible individuals across civil and criminal matters.
  • NALSA — Legal Services & Lok Adalats Information on Lok Adalats (an official forum for amicable, out-of-court dispute settlement) and how to apply for legal aid through your nearest Legal Services Authority.

A note on staying safe: the Bar Council of India's own chairman has publicly estimated that a significant share of people practicing as advocates in India may be doing so on fabricated law degrees or fraudulent enrollment certificates. Always verify an advocate directly through the Bar Council of India's own Advocate Search (or your state Bar Council's own tool) rather than relying solely on a directory listing or the advocate's own claims.

Separately, in February 2025 the Bar Council of India publicly warned against a fake notice, falsely attributed to the Council, claiming to set a "mandatory minimum fee structure" for advocates - a reminder to verify any notice claiming Bar Council authority directly on barcouncilofindia.org before acting on it.
