Finding & Verifying a Lawyer

Federation of Law Societies of Canada (FLSC) The national coordinating body for Canada's 13 provincial and territorial law societies. It sets shared national standards but does not itself license or discipline individual lawyers - a good starting point for understanding how the system fits together.
Law Society of Ontario – Lawyer and Paralegal Directory A free public search (by name, city, or postal code) confirming whether someone is currently licensed to practice in Ontario, Canada's largest province, including practice status and any discipline history. If your lawyer practices in a different province or territory, search for that province's own law society instead.
Barreau du Québec – Verifying the Status of a Lawyer Quebec is Canada's one civil-law province, with its own separate regulator for lawyers (the Barreau du Québec) and a distinct regulator for notaries (the Chambre des notaires du Québec, who handle real estate, wills, and uncontested matters differently than elsewhere in Canada). Quebec residents should use this page, not a common-law province's law society.

Legal Aid & Free Help

Legal Aid Ontario Legal aid in Canada is organized separately by province and territory rather than through one national body. Legal Aid Ontario, serving Canada's largest province, is given here as a starting example - if you're elsewhere in Canada, search for "[your province] legal aid" to find your own province's equivalent body.

A note on staying safe: Canadian law societies have publicly warned about scammers cloning real law firms' websites and using near-identical lookalike email domains to impersonate practicing lawyers, often to run fake inheritance or settlement schemes (Lawyers' Insurance Association of Nova Scotia, Fraud Alert, February 2022). The Law Society of Alberta has separately warned about a fake firm that used real, licensed lawyers' actual names and photos without their knowledge or consent (reported by Canadian Lawyer magazine). Always verify a lawyer's identity directly through their provincial law society's own directory above before paying anything or sharing personal information.
