Finding & Verifying an Advocate
- Nepal Bar Council The statutory regulator that licenses advocates in Nepal, conducts the bar exam, and maintains the official register of licensed law practitioners and law firms under its "Records" section - the authoritative source for confirming someone is genuinely licensed to practice.
- Nepal Bar Association (NBA) A separate, voluntary professional association for lawyers - not a regulator. Registration with the Nepal Bar Council above is legally required to practice; NBA membership is optional and is not itself proof that someone is licensed.
Legal Aid & Free Help
- Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Nepal's legal aid system, established under the Legal Aid Act, 2054 (1997), is coordinated through the Central Legal Aid Committee and District Legal Aid Committees present in all 75 districts, which can provide free lawyers to those who qualify for civil and criminal cases.
A note on staying safe: Being licensed doesn't guarantee honest conduct - The Kathmandu Post reported (June 2016) a case where a licensed advocate was arrested after allegedly accepting large sums of money from clients by claiming he could personally influence a court's decision in their favor. This is a dated, single case, but it illustrates a recurring red flag worth naming: be cautious of anyone, licensed or not, who promises to "settle" or influence the outcome of your case in exchange for extra payment - a legitimate advocate represents your case, but cannot guarantee or buy a particular result.
