Finding a Licensed Attorney

  • American Bar Association The national professional association for attorneys. It doesn't license attorneys itself - that's done state by state.
  • ABA — Find Legal Help An official ABA directory linking to every state's bar association and lawyer-referral service.

Legal Aid

  • Legal Services Corporation The largest funder of civil legal aid in the US - use this to find a local legal aid office.
  • LawHelp.org Free, state-by-state referrals to legal aid organizations, court forms, and self-help resources.

A note on staying safe: always confirm an attorney's license directly through their state bar's own attorney-search tool, not just a third-party directory. Be cautious of referral sites that claim state-bar "approval" without appearing on the bar's own verified list.
