Was I laid off???

I temped in a dental office for 3 weeks last spring. After the dentists employee returned to work he told me he didnt need me anymore. I knew I was a temp so I was okay with that and said thank you for the opportunity asked him if I can use him as a reference he said yes and went on my way. A week later I received a call from his office manager at the time asking if I would accept a permanent position for wednesdays. I accepted and they started me right away. I worked there for 9 months. I received compliments for patients, they requested to see me for their next appt at the office and the dentist always offered me extra hours or to fill in for her other hygienist if she needed a day off. Well for the short time I worked there I seen him go through his staff and they constantly where leaving. His office was slow for me as I was suppost to work 8hr days on wednesdays but sometimes I had no patients and other times I only worked 3-5 hr days at the office. I knew it came with the job and I accepted it. The other hygienist was their tues/thurs and same thing happened to her all the time as well. The office manager quit I believe in late dec/early jan I cant recall exactly. I had no understanding as to why she left but I knew stuff was going on at the office as I said his staff turnover rate was constant. Well in late november I knew I was expecting and that my baby was okay (as i lost a baby in may 2012 so didnt want to say anything til i was sure). When I informed the dentist he told me "this isnt going to work". I told him I really enjoy working for him and would like to continue to work up til I deliver and come back right away to work after. My obgyn told me I could do so. He used nitrous in the office (not very often though) which can lead to spontaneous abortions and the office manager was looking into xray protocol for osha. I was to wear a badge that the dentist was to supply for the employee. they looked into cords so I can go behind a wall or in a room to expose xrays. I had a lead apron that I had purchased so I didnt not need anything but what osha required. My dentist decided instead of buying badge that he and his staff would take my xrays. He has alot of no shows or that cancelled last minute and patients that are late for their appts that came in for me. Well March i had a baby shower and I had a hygiene lady there that asked if I was still working I said yes. She said "wow im shocked he is still dealing with you being pregnant. My friend is suppose to be replacing you at the office". I told her no everything at work is great besides the fact we are slow at times. I loved my job and it was the highlight of my week. I go into work wednesday everyone was very nasty and off to me for the very first time since I been there. The girl at the front desk that the desk grew very fond of and she is pretty and i know they are single etc. I try not to get mixed up in the drama and did well at staying out in the romance department at work as I know there is alot of sexual tension going on there and the patients were noticing and commenting to me on it. (thats a whole other story) Well the girl at the front desk made the comment like she has been every week for a while. WOW your huge now!! How are you still fitting your scrubs. My 8am pt didnt come in that morning so I know dentist was mad about that and then my 8:50 pt didnt show til 9:10 which no one acknowledged he was even late but II took him back right away and waited for xrays it was a pt that required alot of work. I did get finished 5mins late with him. But with my next patient finished early. I had a free polishing to do for a pt that he wasnt happy about either and then my 11 pt cancelled and no one told me! So he lost business that morning as I was their 8-11:15 on the clock. The afternoon was solid and went smoothly and I finished early. I was begging for xrays to be taken though that entire day and staff was saying they where tired etc even when they where doing nothing. (there is alot of down time in the office). My boss also got a phone call that afternoon for a friend hygienist (i heard him talking to front desk girls) saying his friend got turned down for a hygiene job (i know who she is as he mentioned her to me before and so did the lady at my shower) he is a single dentist seems to be getting known for a good looking staff. I know they go out to clubs, dinner, etc. Well friday I get a phone call from him saying "we dont need you for wednesdays anymore". He gave no explanation or anything. So I ask your getting rid of me?? Will you need me back?? he said nothing. Then I asked if I did anything wrong or something. He didnt reply. I ask may I use you ask a reference? He said yes. I asked will you give me a good recommendation. He replied I had good qualities, skills, pts liked me etc. Then I said why are you getting rid of me?? He said um didnt any of the girls in the office ever say anything to you? I said no. He then paused and said the last office manager was suppost to tell me. then he finally said well your not in school anymore. nothing after that. til a minute later. then said productivity is slow. I am assuming he was either saying the office is slow (which it was) or trying to blame me for something... We ended our call. I called the old office manager i didnt say I was let go or anything to her. I simply asked her did the dentist ever want you to tell me anything? She replied well no he always said you where a good employee and that you came in early, picked up speed after learning the office, but she said after I told him I was pregnant he wanted her to fire me and she told him she couldnt because id been there too long already and that it would be discrimination. She said alot more but that was the drift. She also told me that she would have that documented and notarized if needed. I am now showing and currently seeking employment. Offices that know im pregnant arent even calling me to temp now that im bigger. I applied for UE after the phone conversation with the dentist and my sister inlaw that is a manager said i was laid off. I am worried that he will try to fight me on collecting or give me a bad reference since I am trying to collect. What is your opinion on what happened and can he actually fight me on collecting?
