Question

quit or be fired?

Asked 17 March 2011 · 4 answers

The question

I was given the "option" to quit or be fired. For many reasons I am choosing the "quit" option. Can this forced separation still allow me to collect unemployment in Washington State?

Looks like Washington is like most states in that if

you quit, you will probably have a phone interview, and

they'll ask your employer what happened too.

It is possible that you will get unemployment. It is

also possible that you will not.

Conventional wisdom is that you are less likely to

collect unemployment if you quit than if you are fired.

How much water this holds I couldn't say. Here's an

article form a guy who did it in Washington:

Hope that helps!

Thanks. I hope we can make it work out.

p.s. How do I change this to not be under Employment Discrimination and Harassment? I must have put this in the wrong spot...

Getting fired looks bad to a new employer and quitting isn't great, either - unless your justification is summed up. So have your story down ready before you speak to the new employer.

Seriously... good to know. getting fired looks bad.

Thanks for the lawyerly advice.

Anyway, unemployment came through. So this is a closed

issue.
