The question
Good afternoon,
I recently elected to represent myself pro se in a divorce action in NY and my previous attorney will not give me my file because they claim they are required by law to hold onto it for 6 years. They can make me a copy at my expense and they said it would take a long time (I'm sure- its 5+ 5"binders thick).
Can you just tell me if this is true? I asked other divorced individuals and they said when they asked for their file their lawyer promptly gave it to them.
Thank you in advance for your help!
