Question

Possession of Marijuana

Asked 7 December 2010 · 1 answer

The question

I got possession of marijuana (no pot was found, they

found a bowl) and underage possession of alcohol.

Obviously the charges are going to stay. This is my

first offense, up till now I have had a clean record. I

will be 21 in April. Is there any point in wasting

money on a lawyer? They won't get it dropped, I was

caught red handed. Is it worth my money to have someone

standing next to me in court, or should I just roll

with the punches and accept my punishment? From what I

am understanding, with or without a lawyer, my

punishment will be 24 hours community service, 6 months

suspended license and probation for a first time

offense. I'd rather not waste money to have someone

stand next to me in court if they really can't do much.

Since it is your first offense, a lawyer could drop

those charges even more. Honestly, a lot of this stuff

depends on the judge or the area you live in. What you

could do is get a consultation with one or more lawyers

(initial ones are usually free at most firms), and they

could tell you what they can or cannot do.

Of course, there are no guarantees either way. But a

reputable attorney would probably be straight with you

about whether or not it was worth your time and money

to hire him or her.
