Question

Libel exposure for unfavorable online reviews

Asked 11 December 2013 · needs an answer

The question

I had a very unsatisfactory experience with a vendor that bid to provide work from my company. He was unnecessarily insulting, and I have extensive email documentation of our interactions. I let him know that I would be providing a fact-based account of our interaction (which has nothing to do with his skill as a tradesman) on Angie's list so others wouldn't have the same experience.

He came back and threatened to sue me for slander (I think he meant libel) if I posted anything remotely negative about his business. I realize anyone can threaten a lawsuit, but I want to understand how much risk I actually have if I clearly define facts (based on email documentation, perhaps including fully contextual excerpts from such emails).

I do not want to be bullied into not posting an honest review, but at the same time I don't want to be the victim of a costly libel lawsuit because I want to help others fairly evaluate prospective vendors.
