The question

hello i'm not sure if i'm doing this right, my family has worked as carriers for a local news paper for over 15 years and since the new contract and new bigger routes we have been harassed by the route manager and management, even though we are independent contractors they still tell us what and what not to do, if we have a trouble making customer we can't stop delivery if we can't resolve the issue it gets charged against us, i called the bbb and they told me to call the civil rights they said basically independent carriers don't have any rights, the one who is harassing my son with threats now hates white people she looks you with such hate and contempt in her eyes and her attitude says it all but she is careful not to let upper management see it,she also favors her race they can do things and get away with that we can't, one route manager was calling us stupid and liars, he would follow and watch us constantly, he said he would never take the routes away but there were always the underlying threats, when we took it a higher level one of which is the racist it just made things worse for us, i don't see how they can calls independent contractors and still tell what to do when where and how, we are not concidered their employees, they keep heaping more work on us after downsizing and sat and sun deliveries are impossible as we have less time to deliver, before the new contract we only put together the sunday edition, now we have to deliver the ticket, put together the saturday, sunday now in three section, all this cuts into our time, i don't see how they can get away with this, i'm in fear of losing my home because these awful people, we are banging our heads against a brick wall any sugestions would be apreciated,i live in michigan and it is a local newspaper by the newhouses

may our HEAVENLY FATHER AND HIS SON bless you abundantly, ruthie

"An independent contractor is a natural person,

business, or corporation that provides goods or

services to another entity under terms specified in a

contract or within a verbal agreement."

I'm not a lawyer, but I think as long as the paper is

abiding by the terms in whatever contract you have with

them, you have no real legal recourse. Just because

you aren't full employees does not mean they can't set

standards and practices for their business, whether you

agree with them or not. If you feel you are being

overworked, or their expectations are out-sized, then

you might just need to find another job.

If you feel you are being harassed, you could possibly

take it up with an employment attorney. I wouldn't go

with the "reverse racism" bit, though. It doesn't play

well with a lot of people.
