Question

got married in different country

Asked 25 September 2011 · needs an answer

The question

my wife and i live in wisconsin. we got married 7 years ago in mexico. we were told that getting married in mexico is legal, but the united states and the state of wisconsin do not recognize the marriage unless we went to the justice of the peace in wisconsin and filed marriage license. we never did that. all we have to show we are married is the marriage license from mexico and the fact that we have been filing our taxes jointly for the past seven years.

we are looking at divorce right now. do we have to file for divorce through the courts even if they do not have record of us being married? or can we do a divorce document on internet like legalzoom.com?
