Question

Denied employment based on residence?

Asked 14 March 2011 · 2 answers

The question

Is it illegal to be denied employment based on residence?

I had a voicemail scheduling an interview.

When I returned the call (15 minutes later)and identified myself, they asked what city I lived in.

I was told their hiring practice is to only hire applicants from within the city.

I live 45 min away, which shouldn't be their concern.

I thought that you could ask questions similar to: Work starts at 9am would you be able to be here on time- and the like.

Is this illegal? If it is, I'd like to file a complaint with the dept of labor or whomever.

The web searches I've returned aren't very clear.

State laws vary, but by and large employers can hire/fire

whomever they want for any (or no) reason, provided it is

not discrimination based on race, sex, sexual

orientation, religion, martial status, or pregnancy.

If they only want to hire locals, that is their

prerogative. Sorry.

Uh, socioeconomic status too, I think.
