The question
HELP! I just learned of a court date for December! Here are the details. $30,000 debt that I CANNOT pay. NO JOB or INCOME. What can I expect in court? I've already tried to settle, but the offer was way too high for me to afford. Any ideas on what to tell the judge? What can they do to me if I have no income?
Thanks.

I'm sorry I couldn't get to you in time, I just joined this site today. Unless you got a continuance then you probably already know that they will probably take a judgment. But the whole amount will not need to be paid straight away. If you live in IN, and I wish I could figure out how to tell where people are writing from on this site, then you will be called back for what (in IN) is called a proceeding supplemental. At this hearing you will be asked about your assets and employment. If at the time you are unemployed or make less than a certain amount, there will still be a judgment but you would be deemed what is often called "uncollectable." You can expect to be called back to court every 3-6 months to answer the same questions, just in case anything changes.
But, if you don't live in IN then I may just be speaking nonsense. You would do well to speak with a local attorney, or post a question on another site, such as avvo.com to try your luck there.
Best of luck!
