The question
Ok so this is a long story so please bare with
me!
I live in Canada and I've come here because I
can't find any Canadian advice forums for this
type of stuff online. I'm really worried because
my fiancée and I were on government
assistance due to him having heart failure. He
recently got a job as did I.
We collected a month of welfare because up
until that point I had not been paid. I forgot that
my husband had been paid because he is on a
week to week salary and I am on a two week
salary so I filled out the income card according
to my income. I thought that this was our last
month as we were both working. However my
fiancée contacted our worker and she told us
we could collect three more months of payment
not in the full amount but to wean us off
assistance so to speak until we were on our
feet, which made sence to us because we owe
1400 dollars in rent areers to our landlord who
was kind enough to let us live here three
months free while my fiancée was going
through his heart issues.
So everything was apparently ago and the we
got a call at 8 in the morning from our case
worker saying he lied about income because
he filled out our income card as no income.
And when asked if he was working he said no,
but he did not say no to being asked if he was
working, she asked him if he had worked over
time and he has not so his answer was no. He
tells me he knows he should have filled out the
card accordingly and it was a mistake he
wished he hadn't made but when she came at
him about it very aggressively he panicked and
didn't know what to say. He is being
investigated now and I'm really scared of what
could happen.
We have received money from family in small
amounts like 150 which we never claimed
because we had to repay that out of our
welfare check. I'm really afraid he wi go to jail
or get a criminal record because his job does
things for the U.S military and he can not have
a criminal record.
We are more then willing to pay back what
they feel we owe because it is just a little over
1000 dollars in question, but is that even an
option or will further charges be pressed? He
has no prior criminal record nor do I. Can you
please give me some advice? If your still
reading this I really appreciate it and I would
love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!
