Question

Am I liable for any payment to this knucklehead?

The question

Several months ago I filed an insurance claim to hail damage to my roof. I began talking to a roofer that I was interested in doing business with and I gave my insurance company permission to talk with him regarding the amount they would pay for certain items of work.

During us working together I had a small section of rolled roofing detach from a patio, and I asked the roofer about it one day when he was at my house. He had a worker nail down some temporary covering but did not OK it with me. We had previously talked about placing a plastic tarp over the roof to protect it. I did not authorize any work at all, and we did not discuss how much this might cost.

Now I have had a parting of ways with the roofer and I do NOT want to do business with him. He has now sent me a bill for ~$200 for the roof work, and ~$800 for the time spent talking to my insurance company.

Am I liable to pay him anything? I would have gladly paid him part of the ~$200 for the little amount of work done, but the bill for $1000 has made me not want to even pay this now.

If he takes me to small claims court do I have anything to worry about?
