Question

Workplace voyerism

Asked 31 May 2012 · 1 answer

The question

I work for Sears in Lawrenceville NJ and I need advice. The Sears store that I work have an unwritten policy of only hiring White males to work in Loss Prevention where they single out Black employees and shoppers. My problem is that I work in the receiving department which is wired for sound and Loss Prevention have been using the surveillance equipment

to make derogatory comments about me then they zoom the camera in on my face to see my reaction to the insult they also also allow unauthorized people ususlly female co-workers to sit in front of the monitors and encourage them to make comments over the intercom system where they all laugh. Every time I come in to work my co-workers and managers laugh and snicker when I pass by and it's really starting to make me angry to the point of violence. What are my options here?

Apparently, your “coworkers” enjoy harassing you. It is not clear whether they are harassing you because you are black, because you work in the receiving department or because of some other reason.

In any event, it would probably be in your best interests to report this misconduct to Sears Regional HR and/or EEO Departments. I can virtually guarantee that regional HR or EEO representatives will not find their “voyeurism” amusing.

If, however, this behavior continues after you internally report it to company HR and EEO representatives, then you should contact the EEOC or the state FEPA to file a racial harassment charge.
