Who this can affect:

Patients who received bone, tissue or organ transplants

In Sept. 2005, LifeCell Corp. voluntarily recalled all lots of products using tissue from Biomedical Tissue Services. The recall came after untested body parts and tissues were taken without donor permission and sold for transplant use. The owner and several employees of Biomedical Tissue Services were indicted for taking body parts without proper screening or consent. Funeral operators may have accepted money in exchange for ignoring forged death certificates and consent forms.

Patients who underwent tissue, bone or organ transplants are at risk for contracting infectious disease including hepatitis, syphilis and HIV. Biomedical Tissue Services sold these parts to several companies including Tutogen Medical, Lost Mountain Tissue Bank, Regeneration Technologies and The Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas.
