Question

Harassing text messages from ex-wife

Asked 30 March 2009 · 2 answers

The question

My boyfriend is recieving many harassing text messages from his ex-wife. He has told her many times to stop contacting him unless there is an emergency with their kids. She also had a man call his phone and pretend that he is a man that I've been seeing on the side just to try to break us up. She sends him texts from their daughter's cell phone and pretends that she is her saying mean things. I just need to know what options we have. Is this considered harassment? Can he file charges??

If this woman is threatening or abusing you, your boyfriend or the child, you may want to get an order for protection. He can go down to his county courthouse and ask for order for protection forms. If her actions are not considered abuse, your boyfriend can file for a restraining order against his ex-wife.

Sorry to hear about this situation as I'm sure it must be stressful for you and your boyfriend, not to mention the kids since this woman is dragging them into it by using her daughters phone. Check out this article, question 5 provides some information about what you can do if someone is harassing you via text message.

Is it an option for him to turn off the text messaging function on his phone? This might seem like a drastic step but it could be worth it if it puts a stop to his ex wife's behavior.
