Question

Can I sue my father for emotional abuse?

Asked 23 February 2011 · 1 answer

The question

When I was underage my father was emotionally abusive by things he said that were ridiculing. It was something that happened very often. I have a psychologist who can confirm this. I suffer from clinical depression. I believe his emotional abuse contributed to it. I am not a child anymore. Can I sue him?

There is a statute of limitations on nearly every kind of

lawsuit. That means if you don't file within a certain

time frame, you can't ever file the lawsuit. Sometimes it

begins when you're an adult, if the wrongs you suffered

occurred during childhood. Sometimes it starts at the

moment you discover the harm done to you (called the

"discovery rule").

Talk to a lawyer and he or she can tell you whether or

not this is something you can realistically pursue.
